A working manuscript from early in Humboldt's career; an example of the work of proponents of the "new chemistry." Humboldt treats such topics as the composition of air and mentions Lavoisier, Priestley, and others. Humboldt read this paper before the Paris Academy in May 1798. and a corrected version was published in Annales de Chimie, vol. 28 (1798), pp. 123-80.
